- During the period 2000 through 2007, the Kaua'i Planning commission has granted approvals for more than 4,000 transient overnight accommodation units.
- The annual growth rate in tourist accommodations is between 5-7%. The Kaua'i General Plan recommends a maximum growth rate of 1.5%
- Although the Planning Commission (administrative branch of government) is in charge of granting building permits, the County Council (legislative branch) is responsible for our infrastructure, including roadways, public services, wastewater management, and landfills. This disconnect has led to a situation where nobody is taking responsibility for the detrimental impacts of overdevelopment.
- A total of 6,100 resort units are currently pending and may be built within the next five years. A 1.5% growth rate would allow for 125 units per year.
- The rate-of-growth limit in the charter amendment will not apply to residential dwellings.
- The charter amendment does not aim to stop growth, simply pace it to be consistent with the vision of Kaua'i's General Plan.
